Avatar: Way of Water Creates Waves in Theaters

Read Time:2 Minute, 14 Second

Since its release in 2009, “Avatar” has been incredibly successful, making close to $3 billion, so it made sense for director James Cameron to make a sequel to this otherworldly story.

“Avatar: Way of Water” has been hugely successful since its release on December 16th. In the month this film has been out, it has made $1.5 billion – that’s half of what the first made in 14 years.

It has quickly become a must-see movie and has knocked “Top Gun Maverick” off the shelf of the best newly released movies, and for good reason – I believe it is a better film.

James Cameron had always been planning to make a sequel and bring fans back to Pandora, the planet where “Avatar” takes place. He claimed in 2006 that if “Avatar” was successful, he’d continue it.

Then, in 2010, he not only announced that he’d make a sequel, but that he’d film the 2nd and 3rd back-to-back! He did this to avoid the “Stranger Things Effect.”

If you’ve seen “Stranger Things”, you’ll notice the characters get a lot older than they should be in the timeline of the show. It’s just because of how far apart they were filmed. Cameron hoped to avoid that with the third movie.

“Avatar 3” is scheduled to be released at the end of 2024, but he’s not stopping there. Two more movies will be released, one in 2026, and one in 2028.

The idea of having 5 of these movies excites fans. This story is very unique and fascinating. It’s a whole different “alien” type story.

There are mixed feelings about “Way of Water”, but overall, many love it. The story has excellent acting and the special effects are incredible. It’s just straight up beautiful. The underwater ocean scenery is breathtaking.

The whole story is about and takes place in the water, hence the name. They have created fish and creatures like nothing here on Earth. The water is clear-blue and full of life. It’s the perfect movie for ocean lovers.

But for someone who doesn’t know that there are more movies to come, the film may seem to have a lot of missing pieces where the story didn’t quite explain something or answer a question. This might make the movie seem a little less enjoyable.

I felt this way up until I learned the series would continue past this explosive sequel. Cameron made these “plot holes” as sequel bait, encouraging people to look forward to and watch the other movies as they come out. We just need to hold out hope that our questions will be answered.
