On Tuesday the NS Lady Hawks traveled to Nephi where they played the Lady Wasps. NS lost the game 32-51 bringing their region record to 0-3.
“Overall our defense sucked but we managed to communicate better then we normally do,” said Ryann Tapia. Even though NS started slow they were able to tie the score 9-9 after the first quarter.
“You can’t have a good defense without a good offense,” said Jentry Ison
Juab was patient on their offensive attack, they waited until we let our guard and then they went in for layups.
“We just let it happen,” said Griffith. “We had really good moments but they weren’t consistent enough to make a difference.”
Coach Griffith felt like they stepped it up in the second half.
“We played well we just had a hard time putting the ball in the hole,” Griffith said.
Last week NS started their region play. They lost their first two region games to Richfield and Carbon.
On Thursday night the Lady Hawks played the Lady Dinos and lost 36-49. After falling behind to start the game NS found themselves 10 points behind at halftime, with a score of 13-23. But Coach Randi Griffith was happy with the girls performance during the second half.
“We started out slow,” she said. “It would have been easy to quit, but at half-time they came out and battled–it’s not easy to do that.”
Although the Lady Hawks weren’t able to battle back and win they fought hard and Carbon only pulled ahead by three more points in the second half.
“When we were trying to fight back we didn’t do it in the realm of our defense,” said Griffith “We were a half step to slow and it put us in a position where we were fouling.” This caused Senior Danielle Seely to foul out of the game.
”She plays a lot bigger than she is and she did a great job defensively, when she fouled out it took intensity out of the game,” said Griffith.
Besides the defensive intensity, players saw other problems with how the game went.
“We played really scared and timid but when the game was out of reach and we couldn’t win we calmed down and played really well,” said Shelby Ison.
On Tuesday NS played Richfield where they lost 40-54. NS came out slow and in the first quarter they got 8 points to Richfield’s 20.
“As a whole we played much better as a team we just started slow,” said Griffith. They did better in the second quarter and going into halftime Richfield was only ahead by 7 with a score of 22-29.
“Richfield can shoot the ball and is very confident,” said Griffith. “We shoot a lot, in practice that’s what we do for the first 45 minutes, we just need to carry it over to the game.”
NS was able to stay caught up in the third quarter but they lost it in the 4th quarter getting 9 points to Richfields 16.
“At the end of the game the officials were more then happy to put them on the free throw line,” said Griffith.
Despite the foul disparity, players also saw focus as an issue.
”We played good but we had our moments where we fell apart and freaked out,” said Abby Smith.
