She’s floating, flying through the air, and then suddenly it cuts to a black screen and all you see are the words, “To be continued.” That’s the end.
“Wicked,” released Nov. 22, is in theaters all over the country. However, this is a two-part movie, and the second part won’t be released until next November. This movie is a prequel of “The Wizard of Oz,” telling the story about the Wicked Witch of the West and the Good Witch before Dorothy came to Oz.
The story is all about two girls who are opposites, but are forced together, who later become best friends. The first girl, Eliphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, is very misunderstood because she has green skin. Her father hates her, and she has a little sister who is ashamed of her. The second girl, Glinda, the Good Witch, is very popular and well loved by almost everyone she meets. They meet at school, and end up having to be roommates, and as they start having to hang out with each other more, they start to like each other more and more, until they become very good friends.
Elphaba secretly has magical powers, but the headmistress, Madame Morrible, finds out, and starts to teach Elphaba more about magic. Eventually, she gets so good that the Wizard of Oz wants to meet her. So Elphaba goes, and takes Glinda with her, and they have an adventure meeting the Wizard of Oz in the Emerald City.
The actors did an absolutely fantastic job with Cynthia Erivo playing Eliphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, and Ariana Grande playing Glinda, the Good Witch. These actors seemed to go really in depth playing the part. They were able to capture the emotions of these characters, and I thought that they were portrayed very well. They took a lot of time to perfect the roles that they were going to play, and they worked really hard to portray them well.
The other thing that the actors did extremely well was the singing and music. As someone who has seen the actual musical and got to experience all the music live, I thought that they all did an amazing job. The songs are all breathtaking, and Erivo and Grande’s voices blended together very well. The music in general in that movie is incredible.
Another thing that was really well done in the movie was the overall cinematography and the set. There were a lot of bright colors and cool shapes, but one thing that I did miss was the bright color in the Emerald City. I felt that it was lacking the vibrant green color that I was expecting it to have. However, I do think that they did well with the rest of the colors.
They had an amazing set, and according to yahoo.com, “The film’s production designer, Nathan Crowley, had nine million tulips planted to create the look of the magical village, [Munchkinland].”
Overall, they spent a lot of time and money trying to make this set and the cinematography look great.
One thing that I didn’t like as much was how long it was. The first part of the film alone was two hours and forty minutes. Considering that the musical is originally two hours and forty-five minutes and includes all of Act 1 and Act 2, I think they could have cut it down a little bit. However, I can see that they needed to add some stuff to make more sense, and I overall thought it was an amazing show.
This movie was spectacular, and I would recommend this movie to anyone, but especially people looking for adventure packed, drama filled movies with popular stars in them.
