With a record of 19-0 and being ranked number one in all of 3A, the NS girls volleyball team has had an amazing start to their year, and they are determined to push themselves to be even better.
“The goal is to be the best version of the team we can possibly be,” senior Elsie Bailey said.
Last year at state, the NS girls volleyball team lost in the third round of state to Richfield 1-3. The team was devastated after this loss, but it has helped them to have the determination to be the best.
“[State] was hard, obviously, but at the same time I think it helped to drive us to where we are now,” Elsie Bailey said.
For them, this year feels different. They are ready to take on whatever comes at them. However, they’re making sure not to look too far in front of them.
“I feel like we’ve been making small goals so we don’t look too far,” senior Autumn Oldroyd said. “We’re like, okay, next game, the next play. Just those little goals that we’ve been working on so that we don’t look forward.”
Even when competing against teams that are better and bigger, they keep their heads level and make sure to just keep looking forward.
“There is not any match that’s bigger than the next. So we just take what’s in front of us,” head coach Rickie Stewart said.
They’re making sure that they are focused and ready for anything that comes at them, but it did not come easy. Many hours and hard work were put into the team to make them as good as they are right now, and the work is not over.
“We still have a lot more to accomplish and a lot more work to do,” Elsie Bailey said.
They put lots of work in, but they also love to have fun with each other and be around each other. The team has a strong connection.
“We just love spending time with each other, and I feel like that’s why we have such a good connection with everybody,” senior Teya Bailey said.
Not only do they love spending time together as a team and having fun, but they also trust each other very much.
The most memorable moment in the season so far for the team was in their game against Salem Hills. After they lost the first set 26-28, they managed to get back on their feet and won the next three sets to win the game 3-1.
“Going from being down and losing the set to really just being together and unified with one common goal and just being able to fight together, play together, and succeed together like that. That game was really important to me,” Teya Bailey said.
“It’s so fun to play with people you trust and people who are your close friends,” Elsie Bailey said.
Their last home match will be against Canyon View on Oct. 11. State volleyball will be Oct. 26-27.
