One day a student is doing what they love, then the next day they are stuck doing absolutely nothing. As an athlete this kills you because sports are literally your life. As an athlete you do them everyday so when you can’t do them anymore, it kills you.
Ever since injuring his shoulder in a kick return against South Sevier, this has become Trevin Morley’s new reality. Morley can’t do anything like he used to, now that he has to let his shoulder heal for at least three months.
As of right now it is unknown as to how long it will take for Morley’s shoulder to heal.
“[The specialist] is really thinking that where Trevin is so active and healthy that he should be towards 3 to 4 months of recovery time,” said Trevin’s mom, Amanda Morley. “That’s what he’s working towards and we will see what happens.”
Now the challenge for Morley is dealing with his desire to play while watching his team go on without him.
“Obviously I’m frustrated,” said Morley. “I just want to do whatever I can to get back faster, so I can get back to basketball, and football and I can keep competing.”
Though he’s been frustrated with having to miss games and miss out on the success of the football team this year, Morley is still excited for what the team has accomplished so far.
“Yeah, it’s been tough. I mean, you are happy for them to win, but at the same time you really want to be a part of it too,” said Morley.
Morley is not the only one who feels the loss of not being able to participate, the coaches and players miss him in the games as well.
“To lose Trev on the field, it kills me, but we know that he is going to be one of those guys that continues to reinforce our culture on the sideline,” said head football coach Rhett Bird. “Trev is just one of those guys who is the reinforcer for everything that the coaches say to do.”
But Morley’s absence affects more than just X’s and O’s. Players and coaches recognize that he was a leader and a positive influence for the whole team.
“It sucks because he is one of my best friends and he’s not there playing with us in practice,” said Lee, “He’s been at practice but since he’s not padded up it’s just totally different.”
One of the players who has been asked to take on a bigger role since Morley’s injury also feels the loss of not having him on the team.
“It affected it in a big way because he is a starter of our team on defense and offense, and he is just really good and influences our team in a lot of ways,” junior Parker Lee said.
The team has lost a huge asset to their offense and defense because Morley is such a leader and a huge player on the team. Even though Morley is not able to play, the team still has to keep playing and fill in for him as best as possible. One of those replacements is Parker Lee.
Morley said, “He has had to pick up his role with the team and he’s become the stud I knew he was.”
Lee has had to step in and fill Morley’s position which wasn’t that hard to do with learning how to play since he already knew most of the plays. However, it’s been hard to try and replicate the influence that a huge player on the team has.
“Trev was one of those vocal guys, who was always showing energy and passion, by just yelling. He was one of those energy guys,” said Bird.
While Morley can’t physically be in the game, he still has plans to be an influence from the sideline just like Bird wants him too.
“[That he wants to] try to be an influence to take state from the sideline coaching Parker up in his position,” said Morley.
