Buying your fruits and vegetables from the store is much easier than laboring to grow them out of the ground. However, being able to get these fruits and vegetables from a seed brings a different sort of satisfaction to it.
“We wanted to get plants and have our own food,” said NS student Zander White.
Several students at NS say their family has some form of a garden. Some have greenhouses, some have regular gardens, and some have fruit trees. No matter how the seeds are planted or where, they still grow fruits and vegetables that students think are much better than the canned foods from the store.
“We actually have a vegetable garden made out of old recycled bathtubs,” said senior Rachael Jones. Jones is not the only one who doesn’t plant her vegetables in the ground.
“We planted it in water troughs so it’s elevated,” secretary Tori Hansen said.
The time spent taking care of the plants can require hard and dedicated labor. For those students, the work does pay off, and in the end, it ends in the ability for them to receive that feeling of accomplishment.
“It’s gratifying to be able to grow your food,” Jones said, “and be able to eat it and it’s really fresh.”
For some, it is more difficult to grow a garden.
“The soil [where I live] is full of clay and so it doesn’t drain. So we’ll get big bushes but it doesn’t produce a lot. It looks pretty, but it doesn’t produce a lot.”
While managing a garden can require a lot of work and time, there are things that help with the load of responsibilities and time.
“We have little hoses that water the plants,” Jones said.
At the end of the season, something has to be done with the fruits and vegetables that have been growing throughout the year. Which then leads to canning; another of hard dedicated time and labor, although some find enjoyment in it.
“It’s fun to top [the garden] up [with canning],” White said.
Naturally, not everyone does the same thing with the fruits and vegetables they gain from their garden.
“I’ve never canned in my life,” said secretary Tarra Blackhurst. “We eat it or give it to people.”
Gardening is an endeavor that brings enjoyment to all those who put in the time to do it.
“I like being able to can it and have our own fruits and vegetables,” Jones said, “and it tastes better than the stuff in the cans you get from the store.”
