Journalism seniors at NS have had a lot of impactful experiences throughout their time in journalism. Seniors Ben Thompson, Julian Stavros, and Seth Howarth have all had different experiences and a variety of time in the class.

These three journalism seniors explained that journalism has taught them many skills that they could use in the real world after they graduate. Some said that it would help them talk to other people better.

“I feel like journalism has definitely taught me how to forge connections with other people even though it might be uncomfortable” Julian Stavros said. “It just gives you the opportunity to branch out and talk to people that you might not have talked to before.”

Others said that it helped them diversify with their writing and speaking.

“I always have things going around in my head that I want to say, but I can’t,” Ben Thompson said. “So, it really helped me learn how to write, learn how to speak in a manner that wasn’t incredibly weird when you’re having interviews and stuff. There’s just a lot of things I got from journalism that were just really helpful for my everyday life.”

Though Howarth was only in the class this past semester, he found he enjoyed it and wished he had started sooner.

“The environment is such a positive and fun environment. I think it’s hard to get that in a lot of places,” Seth Howarth said.

Thompson, who has been in the class for three years and served as a managing editor this year, said he was definitely going to miss the journalism environment.

“[I’ll miss] the fun little quirky little things that we get to do, like the birthday quizzes, quizzes in the mornings, tables, like this little group that we’ve got,” Thompson said. “Really, it’s just a ton of fun.”

Along with these things, journalism can be a benefit for people. Stavros joined the beginning of this year. He served as an editor and went on the trip to the national conference in Boston back in November.

“I kind of saw journalism as a relief,” Stavros said. “For me, English is my favorite class. So, I actually enjoy writing. Whereas other classes I take, like calculus, I don’t enjoy doing that so it’s kind of a relief because even though it’s homework, I get to do something that I like to do.”

In addition to all of that, they had a little bit of insight for future journalism students.

“Don’t procrastinate. Don’t be afraid to cover controversial stories,” Howarth said. “I realized that it’s okay to cover those things.”

Overall, these seniors felt like journalism was a good experience for them.

“I thought it was a really positive experience. I really wish I would have joined sooner. It didn’t really fit my schedule. I’m glad that I joined this year,” Stavros said.
