NS has added three new clubs to their long list of hobbies and sports: ESports, The BookWorm and Art Club.
E-sports
ESports stands for Electronic Sports and is run by Benjamin Johnson, the new computer science teacher at the school. This new club doesn’t have much of a structure yet but already has many games for the members to play including Smash Bros and Mario Kart. The games vary between competitive games and casual games to team games and solo games. There are even some students that come in to play board games and card games.
“It’s supposed to be electronic games but I don’t turn away students who want to do card games,” Johnson said.
The president, senior Logan Pickering, had wanted this club to come back after it had died off. He and Johnson think of this as a fun club that anyone can join even if they aren’t interested in some video games. And the more students the better.
“We don’t have, in my opinion, enough members,” Johnson said. “We probably have about a dozen – I would love to have more.”
This club meets every Tuesday after school from 2:30-4:30 in Johnson’s room. ESports will have a funded competition between other schools, sanctioned by the Utah High School Sports Association by next year. So far this year they have had about a dozen joins and are still wanting more people to come and check it out for themselves. It’s a great chance to meet new friends and learn, get the chance to create teams or even go solo.
“It’s a good team building opportunity,” Johnson said. “You can go in solo or in teams, I think that’s one of the unique things Esports have that other sports don’t,”
Art Club
Art Club has been started over from scratch with the help of students Sage Ivory and Nila Peterson and teacher Paul Allred. There were lots of hobbies and sports that had been turned into a club like spikeball and chess so Ivory wanted to start a club for those who like art as their hobbies.
For some students the art club may sound like it is for those that are all artsy and those that are good at art, but that isn’t the purpose. This club can help those who really like art or are good at it but it also can help those who just want to be more included in art.
“It’s not just for the kids that do art, but it’s also for the kids that do art and anyone who has an interest in art,” Allred said.
The club will go to see shows and other art museums to help encourage the students to find new ideas for their own art. Those who don’t have much experience with art can also be involved in this to see what they can do to improve or find what types of art interests them.
“Our club helps so much in that process especially Allred, so even if you want advice on your art or even want to get into it talk to him he’s great about it,” Ivory said.
This club isn’t all just about art but it’s also to have fun, make new friends and to discover your talents and your skills.
“Art clubs’ goal is to promote, and even if you don’t like art that’s okay,” Ivory said. “We are just helping you find a community and find people you enjoy being around because we are fun and we are hip and cool. We just really like art and if you like art too then we’re gang.”
The Book Worm
The BookWorm is a brand new book club held by English teacher Kaylene Johnson and senior Taylor Timms, the president, on Tuesday’s during flex. The BookWorm is a book club where the students get together to talk about what has been happening inside the book they are reading. So far this year they have been reading the book “The Maze Runner.”
There are many readers in this club that are really excited to have this club up a dn running for them to enjoy. This club is a fun club that also happens during some of your freetime outside of school and those who love reading will love it too. Many students have lost their love of reading and this club can help with that.
“I also think students who love literature because the whole point of bringing the book club back to the high school is to rekindle the love of literature that I feel like we have lost here,” Timms said.
Not only does this club help with the students that have lost their reading touch, but it can also help with their social lives. The club can help with public speaking and improving social skills with other students.
“I feel like public speaking is a problem and being able to voice and discuss opinions effectively is something people have a really hard time with, and I think book club can help you overcome that fear,” Timms said.
There are so many students this year that are excited to experience these new clubs and have fun with their friends and what they love doing. Most of these clubs need more people to join to have an even better time with the rest of this school year.
