Music is constantly changing and evolving throughout time. Technology has advanced, artists try new genres and generations change the culture.
In our fast-paced world, many people turn to music to escape reality.
“Music is my life. I don’t know how music affects my life because I don’t know a life without it,” music teacher Timothy Kidder said.
Today, many people feel suffocated by their feelings. Trying to find yourself and figuring out who you want to be can be difficult.
“Music is soul searching,” senior Trace Rees said. “It can make you feel things you didn’t actually know were bothering you. You can really get to know yourself.”
With a wide variety of music genres and relatable singers, people tend to seek music that reflects their emotions and experiences.
“I really like rock music because it’s fun,” freshman Benjamin Feltenberger said.
“I used to listen to rock with my dad, and we have some fun memories together.”
Teens are often afraid to open up to their peers. However, talking about their shared interests, like music, can be a great way to break the ice and build connections.
“Music is a great way to get to know someone,” Rees said. “I can see someone listening to Taylor Swift or wearing her merch, and I know I can talk to them and have something in common.”
Artist Gracie Abrams has gained much love over the last few years as she produced her new deluxe album “The Story of Us.”
“I eat her new deluxe album up,” Rees said. “I’ve listened to ‘That’s So True’ and ‘Packing It Up’ countless times.”
Popular and talented artist, Sabrina Carpenter, is making waves with her album “Short n’ Sweet” followed by her single “Espresso.”
“‘Espresso’ is so good. I literally love it,” Feltenberger said.
Current rap can be seen as overwhelming and too abrupt.
“I do not like Cardi B,” Kidder said. “I don’t like what she’s about, or what she thinks is music. Also, the tone of her voice is not on beat or clean.”
Lately, pop and country music have been blending together. Giving the country genre a more typical melody.
“Whatever is going on with country music right now is not it,” Kidder said. “Trying to be pop while incorporating rap? Yeah, it doesn’t mix well.”
Some think that country music is beginning to lose its storytelling. Instead of heartfelt lyrics, it turned to mainstream expressions.
“Country is bad when it’s just filler,” Kidder said. “No story, no emotion, no point, and that’s what it is today.”
Beyoncé, Queen of Pop, has caused much controversy with her album “Cowboy Carter” and song “TEXAS HOLD ‘EM”. Does wearing a cowboy hat make you country?
“Beyoncé has been ruined,” Rees said. “Anytime I hear ‘Cowboy Carter’ songs I hate it. I’m like turn that off.”
All genres of music have their own theme. Country music is a style that many may say is too repetitive.
“Country music makes me want to put a hot needle in my ear,” Feltenberger said. “Every song is about love, tractors, alcohol and women.”
