Is the new attendance policy working? Yes

The new attendance policy at NS brings better communication to students, parents, and teachers.

The previous year’s attendance policy didn’t provide great communication between the school and us students and our parents. The New policy change helps admin and secretaries contact everyone who is on restriction or warning which is something they didn’t do with the old attendance policy. They weren’t calling our parents or bringing them in if we had an N/C.

Sometimes we wouldn’t even know we had an N/C until we opened our grade and it was there, possibly making it too late for us to fix. This year it shows us how many points we have and how close we are to having to stay after school to reduce and fix it.

Not only does the new policy give anew form of communication that way, it also helps our parents see that we’ve gained more points making them quicker in calling and taking care of excusing us rather than letting the points continue to rack up until it’s too late.

People will say how it isn’t fair that if they participate in a sport or a club they are required to fix their grades from the new policy and that they shouldn’t be restricted or punished from playing and from participating. That’s true to a point, but if you’re going to participate in and represent any clubs, sports or school sponsored events at NS you should attend NS.

One of the biggest benefits of the new attendance policy is that it won’t affect our grades. Previous years if we had an N/C, we wouldn’t get that class credit even if we knew what we were doing or talking about in the class. We would fail our classes because of our absences in those classes.

With the new 53G-8-210 Public Education System, this new policy keeps our grades from failing based on our attendance. Now our grades won’t be hurt because of our attendance to those classes. If we are absent this policy still shows how smart we are without having to be there.

However, it’s not like this policy allows students to just not show up. Even before the policy changed, if a student didn’t show up for ten days without any reason from parents the schools are required to drop that student.

With this new policy it’s quicker for teachers and administrators to see and recognize that a student is gone and to contact and reach out to the student a lot quicker than beforehand.

The points will show weekly instead of just showing up when the N/C appears on our grade helping the teachers see who needs their help or who needs to be reached out to.

In the past it was more difficult to see who was struggling and not being here. Now teachers and administration can see who’s not coming and why and can quickly contact and see any problems they might have based on attendance. Before, we would all the sudden fail a class and then it could be too late to help us at that point. They can send letters, emails or have a person sent to the students house beforehand before it’s too late.

The policy can also help us stay more on track with our grades. There’s nothing wrong with a little stress to keep our grades up. Stress helps us stay on top and if it’s a way to keep us from failing and continuing playing then by all means let the stress from this policy help us stay on top of our grades.
