A feeling of being with the people who love doing a sport that they love most. Sharing those memories with friends and family. A sport can make you who you are sharing that passion with others. That is what girls wrestling has been for those who participated.

“My favorite memory from wrestling is probably traveling and staying in hotels with my friends,” freshman Taylie Mcquivey said.

The things that they won’t forget even after a few years of what happened.

Everyone has a different memory of their favorite times.

“There are too many to just name one,” girls wrestling coach Doug Spencer said.  “When we had Oliva Richmond and Journey Toomey wrestling for first place in 2024, it was always fun to watch the Lady Hawks wrestlers do so well as the underdog and get deep into the tournaments.  …Hannah Perry always has the ability to dig extremely well. She had some amazing wins.”

The state finals is something that almost every athlete works towards all season. This year, senior Hannah Perry took fourth at state, making her the only girl from NS to place for the season. Every athlete works to what they want to achieve and what they want their team to achieve

Most coaches really try to help their teams out mentally and physically, trying to push them to what they know they can reach.

“My goal is to always grow the sport of girls wrestling and build successful teams,” Spencer said. “I try to focus on effort and progress over wins so the girls feel comfortable attempting and learning technique.”

Almost every athlete pushes themselves into their best physical and mentals state for their sport.

“Mentally I feel like it trains your brain to know that when you have to do hard things that you can do them and physically it helps you get in shape,” junior Kynnedy Cartwright said.

Every team has their toughest competitors that they have to go against.

This year the girls Wrestling team has been pretty small; they started out with 6 girls on the team and ended with 4. With how small this team is they have made their efforts to become what they are.

Almost every athlete does something to get the mindset for what there going against

“Before my match I prepare myself by listening to music and warming up well,” Mcquivey said. Almost every athlete does something to get everyone else out of there head well they are competing

There are so many reasons why people start a sport. It could be because their family did it, friends tell them to, or they just really want to do it. Spencer started to do it because of his family.

“My daughter wanted to wrestle in 2020 when girls wrestling was first sanctioned,” Spencer said. “Nobody would coach. So Jared Nicolson and I volunteered.”

Family can have a big impact on the sport that you do. They help alot with practice and getting better at the sport.

“I got into wrestling because my brothers and my dad wrestled when they were younger and my brothers told me that I should do it and I did,” Mcquivey said.

Mostly everyone has their own reasons to love the sport that they do.

“The thing about wrestling that I love the most is self discipline,” Mcquivey said.
