The NS girls basketball team is looking forward to seeing a better season this year.
This was showcased during the home game against Providence Hall, which they won 69-36. Elsie Bailey, Evie Kendall and Ava Gardner each had over 10 points..
The team also went on the road up to Layton to face the Mountain View Bruins.
“We had an awesome game against Mountain View,” coach Tyler Schlappi said. “We shot very well and I think it gave us a lot of confidence.”
The team had a lead the whole game til Mountain View tied it up to go into overtime. NS fought hard til the very last minutes, then fell short, ending the game at 60-65.
Malia Schlappi had her best game yet, scoring 30 points with a 61 field goal percentage. The team is ready to put into action the lessons learned from the pre-season and shift their focus to the upcoming season. NS girls basketball coach Schlappi is making sure of it.
“We want to improve five wins, from our last year which was seven wins,” coach Schlappi said.
To accomplish this, he is making sure to implement what he learned last year into this season.
“We are going to increase our defensive pressure and our defensive philosophy, offensively, we are gonna be more disciplined,” Schlappi said.
Assistant coach Mike Schlappi has many of the same thoughts, focusing on the upcoming season.
“We have a goal to get this basketball program at North Sanpete to a higher level,” Mike Schlappi said.
The team has many focuses right now, a huge aspect of this is the individual talent each player has on the team.
“This year’s individual skill per player as far as their ball handling, passing, and just they just played a lot of basketball,” Tyler Schlappi said.
Many have worked hard over the summer and throughout the year, joining in camps with their team and practicing on their own.
“If you do it in the off season, your odds of succeeding are much higher,” Mike Schlappi said.
Junior Elsie Bailey has loved the camps mainly for the team bonding aspect instead of individual work.
“I think it has experience in every aspect like team bonding,” Bailey said. “It’s where the team chemistry begins and spending all that time together.”
The team has their main focus on their four seniors that have played all four years of basketball.
“I think that we’re a little bit of a more veteran team than we were last year,” Mike Schlappi said.
The seniors have had much time to understand and love the sport more. They also have been very supportive of the younger kids and they do their best to help them out when needed.
“The seniors are such a good example to see just for the whole team,” said junior Autumn Oldroyd.
The team has already overcome many injuries that have happened on the court and off the court, but it has not put down any of their determination to keep working hard.
“I feel like a lot of us are super competitive and so, we just always want to keep pushing even when it means it’s going to hurt later on,” Oldroyd said.
