“Fallout 4” is a very interesting game, drawing you in with mystery and a sense of adventure. It takes place in a wasteland that can be beautiful and scary at the same time. You never know what you’re going to run into, whether it be an odd person or a settlement.
As you start you are in a post-apocalyptic world defending yourself from scavengers, you must use your wits and fast tongue to advance higher socially. You quickly become attached to your new character and invested in the fate of your new world. You perform little tasks and side quests to gain experience.
But this is very different from how you begin. You start the game as a citizen in Boston during the 1950’s. You’re in your house with your spouse and newborn son, and a butler robot that is charming and upbeat. You also catch a glimpse of what America might have become in the world’s fair during the 1930’s. Nuclear power has become the main source of power, and it’s what everyone is using. Your life is good until a distressful television broadcast, you and your family are then promptly rushed into a vault just outside of your town. You are then placed in cryogenic stasis for 200 years, and you wake up in the year 2277. When you get out you find your son has been kidnapped and your spouse has been killed, you also find a world still recovering from nuclear warfare. You head to your home, and the once great city of Boston is now in ruins. The need for you to find your son is strong, and you willingly go into the crazy world to find your son.
Nuclear war has taken its toll on the world, and you are often challenged to make compromises in a world where everyone wants to survive but no one want to work together.
For some the terrible truth of the world has caused them to go mad, but for others the radiation has turned them into abominations. The instability seems permanent in this world, it seems to be everywhere but The Institute. The Institute is a group of scientist cut off from the world, they do experiments and claim they are helping but others don’t seem to think so. The Institute has It’s way, life is good for whoever gets to live there. They build what is called synths in the game, a synthetic human. The conflict between humans and synths in “Fallout 4’s” main plot line. Challenging the player to define what life is, when the line between organic and synthetic is blurred.
The game has many side quests, whether is be a retrieve mission or dungeons quests, you’re thrown into combat. “Fallout 4” has an interesting way of fighting, which is a thrilling mix of real-time shooting and using an I game system called V.A.T.S.. While using that system you choose a certain body part of your enemy, and you are shown how likely you are to hit that enemy, as well as how much damage it will do to them. It helps you be more resourceful and effective in the wasteland. It’s the same combat used in “Fallout 3” and “Fallout: New Vegas,” but in those games it merely paused the game, but in “Fallout 4” it just slows down gameplay.
You will often find yourself out of ammo, or hunted by oafish mutants when wounded. You can flee but might miss the opportunity to find valuable loot on fallen opponents. You are constantly weighing the pros and cons of your decisions, fighting moral dilemmas, and there is rarely ever a right choice. Pulling you further into the game emotionally, you’re also always on the hunt for new gear, you’re constantly on the pursuit for loot. It allows you to find needed resources, but also allows you to get everyday items needed in gameplay. Bobby pins are needed for picking locks, and other items can be scrapped for new items, or simply improving items.
As you look for your son you trade your service for information with little society’s of survivors. Yow slowly grow sympathetic to their causes and needs, and over time when you gain their trust they can join you on your adventure. The first companion you come across is a German Shepard, commonly known as Dogmeat. Many became fond of his presence, his wagging tail and bark grows on most players, but him and other followers can be an annoyance, giving commands is a pain no matter who the follower is. As well as sneaking, often your sneak level will be higher, so enemies won’t hear you but they will hear your companion.
Overall “Fallout 4” is an amazing game, and after you turn it off you will find yourself questioning your choices. You will often want to sit back down and continue playing, or just finishing that last quest. This game pulls you in emotionally, and you grow attached to it. “Fallout 4” Is a good game, and if you ever get the chance to play then you should take it and enjoy it to the fullest.v
