The regular season for the Hawks is in full swing, and so far it’s been more negative than positive.

NS lost their first two games against Richfield and Carbon, but were able to come back with a dominant 66-48 victory over the Juab Wasps.

“Everybody worked, and didn’t care about who [had personal success],” head coach Cris Hoopes said. “They were all concerned on the success of the team.”

Senior Jake Hadley led the team in scoring with 19, with nine of those points coming from beyond the arc.

The coaches decided to start senior Spencer Applegarth instead of senior Trent Seely. Hoopes said that they’re just trying different strategies to see what works.

“[We were] just implementing different strategies,” Hoopes said. “They all can play, and we thought that Spencer deserved a shot to give us energy off of the bench. Sometimes you just need a change.

NS improved defensively from the Carbon game to the Juab game, and the Hawks allowed far fewer points.

“We worked harder because we picked up full court,” Hoopes said. “Our [players] play with more energy, and it gets them moving a little better.”

Despite this eighteen point win, NS knows that their next game against Canyon View on Wednesday will be a challenge for the team.

Canyon View is 2-0 with wins against Juab and Carbon on the road.

“They’re a good team,” Hoopes said. “They shoot the ball really well, and are a hard-working team. We’ve just got to go and outperform them.”

Although they got out to a rough start, Hoopes and company believe that they can still succeed this season.

“We just take it one game at a time,” Hoopes said. “We feel confident about any of these region games.

The Hawks have been able to establish that they’re a force to be reckoned with, but know that they’ll have to be at the top of their game in order to succeed on the region and state levels.
