NS boys basketball season is about to start this year, with players already working to improve their skills as a team, even though the season doesn’t officially begin until Nov. 7 .
“We’ve worked pretty hard in the summer, and we went up and played with a lot of teams that are good,” senior Beau Jacobson said. “We still have lots of things to figure out, but I have a lot of confidence in this team, I know my teammates have put in a lot of work and I know it will be a successful season.”
Despite a hard loss last year and the previous seniors gone, the team also shares Jacobson’s enthusiasm, along with their coach.
“[This season] should be pretty fun,” NS basketball coach Bill Pollock said. “It’s a new season, it’s a new group of boys, and they have the potential to be really good.”
They don’t just want to improve skill wise; they want to come closer as a team in order to really release their full potential.
“If you can trust each other on the floor,” said Jacobson, “it makes it a lot easier to just play as a team and as a group, having those connections.”
Girls basketball preview
This year the NS girls basketball team is expected to do well this year with many returning players and a new coaching staff including assistant coaches Tyler Shlappi, Allan Kendall, and Emily Bird.
“I’m super excited!” coach Taylor Christensen said.” I feel like I’ve had this group for a really long time, and it’s finally their turn to be the seniors and leaders.” “I’m also super excited about our new coaching staff, they’re going to be awesome with the girls.”
The team has spent years together, from the beginning of their freshman year when there was a single senior on the team, to now being those seniors.
So now, even with these new coaches, the girls remember when it was new for all of them, including Christensen.
“The first year she coached it was like you could tell it was a first for all of us and it was new to all of us,” senior Emily Strait said. “I think that Taylor is a really good coach along with the other coaches, they do a good job.”
Learning from those previous years, Strait and the rest of the team are looking forward to the season.
“You never know until you get there, but our group of varsity has been playing varsity since we were freshman, so it will be exciting to see how we do as a team and where we will go,” said Strait. “It’s been pretty swell.”
