Chicken jockey, the nether, and I am Steve. Crowds erupt while throwing popcorn and even chickens, “A Minecraft Movie” has fans in a chokehold, including me.
Minecraft, a fantasy video game, was brought to the big screens, April 4. From a veteran’s point of view, with over ten years of experience playing Minecraft, I had very high expectations for this movie.
In the movie we are introduced to a man named Steve, a poor salesman that yearned for the mines ever since he was a child. While mining he stumbled upon the Orb of Dominance.
Steve was transported to the overworld in Minecraft and decided to live there, leaving his life he hated behind.
Our main character, Henry, and his sister, Natalie, moved to Chuglass, Idaho, after their mother passed away. This is where we find our other characters, Garrett and Dawn. They all eventually get pulled into the world of Minecraft, having to embark on a quest all together to get back into the real life world.
The casting of this movie has many remarkable faces such as Jack Black, Emma Myers, Jason Momoa, and Jennifer Coolidge. I think most did an incredible job to make the audience and me laugh.
Jack Black, also known as Steve, said some remarkable quotes that many will never forget such as, chicken jockey, flint and steel, and release. The trailer to the movie included many of these, which eventually turned the scenes into an internet joke, creating huge publicity for the movie before it even came out.
I also believe Jason Momoa and Jack Black were amazing on the screen together, they almost complemented each other perfectly, and overall I think were greatly casted.
One of my favorite parts from the movie was the main character, Herney, walking through the village with his group.
He said “ Woah, is that some sort of king,” While a pig with a crown walked in front of them. Steve looked at Henry and said, “No, that’s a legend.” Which is a reference to a late YouTube star, Technobalde, that made an impact on the Minecraft community, sadly, he passed away in June 2022 after a brave battle with cancer.
In the auction scene we see minecraft stars such as DanTDM, Aphmau, Mumbo Jumbo, and LDShadowLady. This cameo was a nice touch on some important figures in the minecraft community.
The funniest part and my favorite part of the whole movie is Jennifer Coolidge going on a date with a villager. A waiter looked at the villager and asked, “Are you finished?” Jennifer Coolidge responded, “No, I think he’s Swedish.” Hands down the funniest joke I will ever hear.
Some of the parts I did not enjoy was how Natalie almost felt like a fill in character. She was somewhat important in the plot, but I do wish she could have had some more depth into her character. I also did not understand why Steve broke into song when singing about chicken and his dog. It did lead into some comical parts to remember, but it also felt very random at the least.
A Minecraft Movie made incredible numbers, overpassing their budget with $150 million dollars, they already made $550 million worldwide.
Overall I think “A Minecraft Movie” was a huge success, purely on the way it was marketed and how big the gaming franchise is. It was a good movie mostly for the comical parts it had, but I did find the plot a bit dumb and not that interesting. I wish they had to explore more of the world of Minecraft. I don’t think I would ever freely turn this movie on in my freetime, but would not be opposed if someone were wanting to watch it. My number rating would be a solid seven out of ten for “A Minecraft Movie.”
