Girls soccer program inspires youth

Every year at the Moroni Elementary School, the staff sets a goal for both the students and the faculty to work towards for the entire school year. The goal changes with the needs of their school.

This year, the goal is resilience. Resilience is the capacity to withstand or recover quickly from difficulties. The staff feels the school needs resilience because it is a skill that if learned, will benefit lives. They hope that their goal can help not only the school, but the entire community learn to bounce back from trials. They invited the NS girl’s soccer team to help them out with their goal.

With the goal in mind, the staff at the elementary school sought out different ways to bring resilience into their plans. One thing that came to mind was their soccer participation. Staff found that usually only the kids with experience would go out and play soccer, the majority of them being boys. They wanted to find a way to get new kids, especially girls, to play at the same time as the experienced kids.

“We don’t have a lot of girls that use those goals,” Moroni Elementary Principal Stacey Peterson said.

After some brainstorming, they came up with a plan: The school would bring in a new set of soccer nets for the inexperienced kids to play on. This way, both groups of kids would be able to have goals to play soccer at. In addition to having the NS girl’s soccer team teaching the girls about soccer, they held an assembly with only the girls to get them excited.

“It just kind of evolved with all these discussions,” Peterson said.

In the assembly, the girls learned about women in history, sang songs together, and took turns shooting goals in the new soccer nets. They wanted to make this assembly an enjoyable experience for every girl who went. In the future, they will do more assemblies with the girls to boost self worth and skills.

“It really helps girls to get out of their shell and be confident in themselves,” senior Belen Wright said.

The NS girls soccer team also went to the assembly to help out with the program. They have gone down to the elementary school a few times since the assembly, playing soccer with the girls to help encourage them to get involved with the sport during recess. The example of older girls playing and getting excited is one that will inspire youth to continue with their athletic aspirations.

“I think it helps girls decide to do soccer or any sport in the future,” sophomore Bailee Mayo said.

While currently focusing on helping girls with their resilience, they have some things they would like to do with the boys as well. They are planning assemblies for the boys that will focus on being respectful to one another and showing kindness.

“This is for the boys and the girls,” Peterson said.

After last year’s successful goal, the staff at Moroni Elementary hope that their aspiration of improving the students’ resilience will have positive results as well.
