Learning to understand someone else’s point of view is a hard task, but it is crucial for the connections we make with others. One of the biggest divisions in society is generational issues.
Each generation has different traits and characteristics that explain what they stand for, why they act in certain ways, and ultimately who they are.
People compare these differences between generations until it seems as if they are black and white, with little common ground to meet. There is a space between us that makes it seem as if that connection is just out of reach.
The NS Times staff has decided to take a deeper look into the topic of generational differences. In the process of addressing these issues, we will have a series of stories for the rest of the school year that explore a variety of related issues that divide generations..
Our goal is to help bridge the gap between generations, so everyone can see that despite the differences from the past to now, we all go through struggles. It is important to know that there is common ground between generations. Understanding this will be beneficial to anyone who is willing to change their perspective on this topic.
Overall we hope that examining this issue will help make a difference in homes, the community, and our school. Learning to love and appreciate every generation will make an astonishing difference. With change comes progression.
Making these steps toward change involve a genuine effort of getting to know who the generations are and why they are important.
The different generations we will focus on is Generation X (born 1965–1980), and Generation Z (born 1996–2010). Which is the relationship between parents and teenagers. There will also be routes taken to understand The Silent Generation (born 1928–1945), and Baby Boomers (born 1946–1964) as well.
The world is so different from how it used to be, and many teenagers deal with emotions differently than they used to. Our problems are much different than the people who raised them.
There is also a tremendous amount of pressure on youth to succeed. Our lives have become hyper focused on things that take away from connecting with others, especially their parents.
Family relations are failing, and there is a lot of tension within homes. Coming to better understand teenagers or adults could strengthen personal ties and decrease the gap between the two generations.
Not only have the people changed, but the things of the world have too. Many trends have been developed or lost, and we want to have honest conversations about these difficult things, including technology, emotions, work ethic, gender, clothes, music, and more. It is important to realize how different generations see the world.
Through NS Times covering these difficult topics within generational issues, we hope that lives will be changed because of this content. We want people to know that age doesn’t define you and we can decrease the space between generations to come.
