“Your eyebrows are supposed to be sisters, not twins,” said senior Shaylee Wilkey.
At least that’s what her mom taught her. To some people this fact is hard to understand. To Wilkey, it means that when you do your makeup, it’s ok for it to not be 100 percent exact.
“People think, ‘Oh, to be good at makeup ev- erything has to be perfect’, and it doesn’t,” Wilkey said.
Some girls don’t realize how simple makeup is, and the real purpose behind it. Perfection isn’t al- ways the answer, if you feel confident, then you’re doing it right. The perfect makeup look is hard to describe, mainly because there isn’t one.
“Makeup is supposed to look like you can tell someone’s wearing it but it’s not super obvious,” said junior Lakely Brotherson.
In today’s world, the trend is to focus on your natural beauty, but still be you and express yourself. One example is the soap eyebrow trend which focuses on your natural look. You brush your eyebrows up and glue them down, giving an unruly look.
Some other trends that focus on expressing yourself in bold ways that aren’t so natural. An example of this is winged eyeliner. Especially on Tik- Tok, you see a lot of bold looks, and people experimenting with it.
“I think it’s cool [wearing bold makeup] be- cause if you’re going to wear a ton of makeup you have to have a lot of confidence in it,” Brotherson said, “but that’s hard to say because some people wear a lot of makeup because they don’t have confidence.”
Makeup is just an interesting thing because ac- cording to an NS Times survey, most girls started wearing makeup in middle school and some even started as young as 4th grade.
Middle school is the time to try and build your self-confidence, and makeup is a good way to do it.
“I definitely feel way less confident when I’m not wearing makeup,” said NS senior Aubry Cook. “I feel like I still can talk and be a normal person. Definitely when I’m wearing makeup I feel more confident and like people will like me more.”
This is an example of a psychological phenomenon called the lipstick effect, where wearing makeup can boost your self esteem, bring back confidence, and overall positivity.
“You can wear as much as you want, as long as you feel good, and you feel like you look good, then you should wear as much as you want,” Cook said. “I feel like you shouldn’t wear it for other people, you should wear it for yourself.”
The difference between wearing it for yourself and wearing it for others is when you wear it for yourself, you do it because you wanted to. You did it for the lipstick effect.
Sometimes when girls have the wrong idea about makeup, it can affect them in a negative way.
“[Some negatives are] how they look at them- selves or maybe how other people look at them,” senior Malorie Hafen said. “If they’re looking up to an older person like, ‘hey they wear a lot of makeup, I wanna be pretty like her’… but they’re already naturally pretty.”
