The FCCLA organization recently started a fundraiser to raise money for prosthetic legs for kids in other countries. Stu- dents will be able to use an on- line QR code to purchase pairs of socks online, which will be delivered to the school or their homes.
“We went to a national FCCLA conference, and while we were there, they were promoting this fundraiser that the national FCCLA had promoted in their national conference in July,” FCCLA advisor Auralee Brooks said. “For every ninety packs of socks we sell, we can buy one prosthetic leg for a kid in a third world country.”
The official name of the fundraiser is “Socks for Legs.” While selling socks in the school to raise money to buy prosthetic legs for children in third world countries, FCCLA’s main goal is to buy at least one prosthetic leg.
“The goal is just to at least sell ninety pairs of socks,” FC- CLA president Hope Shelley said, “and that will get us one prosthetic leg. We’re hoping we can sell a lot more though, because selling these socks and making money to buy prosthetic legs for these kids is super cool.”
These prosthetic legs will primarily be helping kids in foreign and third world countries become able to walk again; additionally, the kids will have a way to get to school and get an education.
“Some people in third world countries like these kids lose their legs and have no way of getting to school,” said Shelley, “and most of these kids, the only way they can get to school is by walking. Once they lose their legs, it’s like their dreams can’t even come true because there isn’t a way for them to get to school and get an education. By doing this, we can help kids get to school and get an education. I think we all take walking every day for granted, and some kids don’t even get to walk and so this will just help them be able to walk and receive the education they need.”
To help these kids reach their goals and get an education, FCCLA has been selling socks in packs with three pairs of socks to each pack. The packs cost twelve dollars, and they offer many different pairs of socks.
“So, each pack of socks is twelve dollars,” said Brooks, “and they all come in lots of different styles. I like a lot of them, and I think they’re fun and cool. There’s one with narwhals, another with peppers or something like that, and they’re just super fun socks that I think the students would like a lot.”
The Socks for Legs promotion will be going on until Oct 31.
