Though a rough year, 2020 held many positives

Now, that was a rough year. But for many reasons, 2020 wasn’t all that bad. In fact, many positive things came out of it.

“I’ve still been able to hangout with my friends and try lots of new things,” said Kallie Spencer.

Many people throughout 2020 have taken up new hobbies, whether it be cooking, drawing, learning a new instrument, singing, or other skills and will hopefully grow on these hobbies in the year to come.

“Everything is okay,” said Levi Palmer, a Junior at North Sanpete. “No matter how crazy it gets, there is always tomorrow, and you’ll make it.”

This was one positive lesson that he got out of 2020. Numerous lessons can be learned from this past year. We have definitely come out stronger and wiser than before.

“I’ve taken school and my whole social life for granted,” Palmer said.

This is something that many students can relate to, but now students have gained a greater appreciation for things that they have so easily belittled in the past.

“I’ve gotten closer to friends that I don’t usually talk to,” said Helena Delbecq, a Junior at North Sanpete. “and slept a lot.”

With quarantine came a break from school and/or work, a time to reset and relax. Though some used quarantine as a time to sleep in, others took it as an opportunity and many people began to workout.

“I did lots of stuff with my brother outside,” Palmer said, “like biking, parkour and other fun stuff.” Like Palmer many people have taken up things like, biking, rock climbing, and hiking within this past year.

With the excessive amount of time and boredom that came from quarantine, people were able to get to home projects that they may have put off, as well as take on new ones.

An anonymous party from the NS times survey said a big part of staying positive throughout these hard times was through “music and imagination.”

Many artists from around the world came out with new albums this past year. Amongst the most popular of those artists were Taylor Swift, Billie Eillish, Drake, Cardi B, and more. Music has been a great distraction from all of the hardships surrounding 2020.

Another student said “the simple things like spending time with family and knowing that I could hangout with friends later, just not now.”

A great deal of 2020 was spent at home. Though some may think of it as a bad thing, others have grown closer to their families’ and formed great relationships.

“We learned how to handle complicated situations,” said another surveyed student. Many have taken this year as a learning experience and will be stronger in the year to come.

Though at times it may be easier to focus on the bad, it is always better to search for the good. Positive thinking can improve both your well being, health and help you to manage stress.

With all of the negatives to come out of 2020, many positives have too.
