Breath in, breath out. Get into character; it’s show time. The bright stage lights send drops of sweat down his neck. Words and lines running through his mind. All eyes on him the show begins.

Sophomore Spencer Brown recently portrayed the part of Seymour in the high school musical “Little Shop of Horrors.” Last summer, Brown moved from Texas to Sanpete after living in Texas for seven years.

“My home was smaller, my school was tiny, it’s whatever,” Brown said. “I thought I would just have to get used to it, and I did.”

Brown wanted to be do as much as he could when he moved here, and has accomplished that goal being involved in drama, marching band, percussion and football.

“I have been involved in everything I could be involved in,” Brown said.

Brown plays many instruments in percussion like drums, xylophone and marimba. Brown is not only involved in the percussion class, but he was also in marching band.

“Drumming is one of the only things I know I am good at,” Brown said. He especially likes to play the drums when he is angry, “so that I can hit something—it helps me get my anger out.”

As for football, Brown started playing in 3rd grade, although he stopped playing for a while after eighth grade. He started again his sophomore year, and now plays inside linebacker on the football team.

“I missed playing football, and then my dad was the coach so I thought I would give it another shot,” Brown said.

Now that the musical is over, Brown wants to join the baseball team. He likes the sport and wants something else to do in his newfound spare time that he is good at.

“I think I am better at baseball than football,” Brown said.

Academically, Brown would say that his best core subject is Language Arts.

“I used to be good at math but I’m just not anymore, and I like language arts because I like being creative and writing stories,” Brown said.

Being involved in school on so many levels takes a lot of hard work, and Brown didn’t just get where he was by sitting around he had to have something to motivate him.

“I know you are not supposed to compare yourself to others, but when I see someone doing something that I want to do, that’s when I realize if I want to do that I have to work harder so I can be more like them,” Brown said.

Brown also has hidden talents, one of which being double jointed in his thumbs. He can bend his thumb backward and almost touch it to the back of his hand. His other talents were revealed to the community during his time as Seymour.

“My hidden talents aren’t really hidden anymore since I have done parts of the musical ‘Little Shop of Horrors’ for the whole school,” Brown said.

Brown has some big dreams; one of which is to become a talk show host like Jimmy Fallon.

“I think being a talk show host would be the best job ever because those guys just live the life; they get to hang out with celebrities all day, and after all that you can still go home and have a family,” Brown said.
