Studies show that men are more likely to receive speeding tickets than women

You’re running late. School starts in five minutes and you just started driving to school. What do you do?

You might choose to speed to get to school on time, and if so, you just might see flashing lights behind you.

Students all over the U.S. are getting pulled over and receiving tickets everyday for many different reasons, but mostly for speeding. Tickets are not always given out evenly though.

“I feel like guys get more tickets,” Maren Bench said. “I feel like they are a little more reckless when they drive, and I feel like they do dumber things when they’re driving.”

And although guys receive tickets, so do girls. But girls come away with a lot of warnings and not as many tickets.

“I think that guys come away with more tickets,” said Kason Ericksen. “I feel like girls and guys get pulled over almost equally, but I think guys are just a little more aggressive towards the cops and I feel like girls just wouldn’t be as aggressive towards the cops.”

On average, around 11 million men and boys get pulled over every year while only 7 million girls and women get pulled over each year.

Around 63 percent of all tickets also go to men and men have a reputation for driving more dangerous as well. Some at NS high school have proven this.

“I got pulled over for speeding,” Gideon Palmer said, “and when I got pulled over, I felt a sort of adrenaline rush and then when the cop came to talk to me, he just told me not to speed and gave me a ticket. First time being pulled over and I didn’t even get a warning. I just got a ticket.”

Even while some students get tickets from getting pulled over their first time, others haven’t received a ticket and have been pulled over a lot.

“I’ve been pulled over a few times, and one of the times I was going like twenty-five over the speed limit and I still didn’t get a ticket,” senior Jared Strait said.

But what was the key in getting out of all of these tickets?

“The key to getting out of a ticket is to act completely calm and get on the cop’s good side,” said Strait. “You have to be open with them and just tell them, ‘hey I’m sorry, I know I was speeding, I was just in a rush getting from here to here.’ The last time I got pulled over I just said, ‘hey man, I’m sorry I was speeding, I was just trying to get back to Cavaliers’ and he was like, ‘ok, that’s understandable, just go a little slower next time,’ and he let me go.”
